How to get RDP access again with multiple sessions on a machine
How to get RDP access again with multiple sessions on a machine
You may run into this scenario from time to time:
I am unable to RDP or TS into a server remotely because 2 people are logged in and the console port is in use.
Let’s just say that the people or person occuping the maximum number of allowed connections(including console) is new and doesn’t realize that they need to actually disconnect the session and not just click the ‘x’. So you are an admin too but you can’t RDP in. Here is an alternative method:
- Locate a machine that is running the same OS. In this case it was WIN2K8. You can obtain a remote prompt on that machine by using psexec.exe from:
http://www.hpdit.com/sysinternals/psexec.exe
Then you will want to query the terminal server of the machine you are not able to RDP into. (Discussed later)
- Copy the binary by clicking into it and saving locally to a place where you can find and execute it easily from the command line.
- Press Windows key and R and then type in cmd and press enter.
- CD to the directory you saved the psexec.exe binary and run the following command:psexec -u domain\admin_creds \\servername cmd
*Note you can always verify you have a remote command line prompt by checking the hostname as follows:
hostname
Press enter and it will produce the system’s hostname
- Press enter and type in the password of the user with the admin creds and press enter.
- Then do a query of terminal sessions by doing the following:query session /server:servername
- Look for the sessions to pop up and find the desireable one to end.
- End it by typing in the following:reset session [ID] /server:servername
- You can re-run that query again to determine that the session has been disconnected.
- Exit out of that prompt by typing exit and then pressing enter.
- Launch an RDP session ie.
mstsc /v:servername
A connection.
Windows Server 2003-2008 How to tell if a Server is a VM
Many advanced tricks for determining what you have in a client’s server environment can be determine easily and quickly, as long as you have Admin access to that machine. It is easy to know how many physicals hosts you have.
In order for this trick to work you will need to have Admin rights to the machine. Assuming that this is the case you can then proceed first of all you will want to psexec to the machine then from there simply run a reg query. The following line of code is what you will want to put in:
C:\reg query HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SystemInformation\
The results will be likely similar to the following:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SystemInformation
BIOSVersion REG_SZ 080112
BIOSReleaseDate REG_SZ 06/09/2009
SystemManufacturer REG_SZ Microsoft Corporation
SystemProductName REG_SZ Virtual Machine
InformationSource REG_DWORD 0×0

What to do and not to do when IT Consulting, especially for good customers
Consulting can certainly be a rewarding endeavor. In my career I have come across consultants from all different backgrounds, specialties, and areas of expertise.
However, on occasion you will find either the new consultant, the ineffective reseller, dot.bomb washout, or crook who somehow has convinced their customer that they can consult in a field or technology that is far out of their specialty.
How to Spot a Fake / Flake in IT Consulting
These types of consultants are pretty easy for other consultants to spot but not always easy by the customer.
Typically, these types of consultants do the following:
- They make exaggerated claims or have very high prices as their business model is set to make money and run.
- They will not give you a specific answer on anything, but will likely stretch jobs out and show no progress.
- They will try to recommend solutions that are not truly solutions to the issues you have, as it shows their area of skill lacks project match.
- They can try to change your mind in a 180 degree manner to do something that either takes longer or is simply not related.
- They will make a lot of claims but have no follow through to confirm them.
If you are doing this now, STOP! Consider the following:
- Do you want to risk a lawsuit?
- Do you want to continue to embarrass yourself and the customer?
- Do you think that you are truly doing the customer any good by wasting their time and money?
If you are considering telling a half-truth, consider the following:
- Do you want to risk your reputation and knowledge as an IT Consultant?
- Do you wish to lose this customer and others this customer could have referred along with customers who they know and you work with?
Let me propose the following to the Consultant in this fiasco:
- Find a way to communicate to the customer that you made a mistake, you want to come completely clean of this and do the right thing which is get them the help they needed to begin with.
- If you have not put yourself into a bad situation, consider being upfront and honest with the customer by stating something to this effect:
I don’t feel comfortable consulting in this area, but let me check with my friends and see if we can help you with your IT needs.
or
-
I do not know this technology sufficiently to help here, but I would love to help you find someone that can as I know it can be difficult sometimes to find experts in this area.
This will not only build trust with your customers, you will likely not lose their respect and you have the possibility of coming back to help in an area they need help in, making a referral fee on the consulting firm you referred, or even getting additional business because of your honesty and your willingness to help the best you could without impeding progress.
If you are without friends in the IT Industry who can help you succeed, send me an email I’d be happy to help, as we have 30+ years of experience in the IT Industry and certainly can help.
Good luck with your future endeavors
IT OUTSOURCE USA!
My favorite topic: Outsourcing to the US, what a wonderful concept!
This is why HPD Global IT Consulting believes in Outsourcing to the USA
- Better understanding of IT Products as most technology solutions are driven from the US
- High QA in terms of support as your IT Support Department speaks English as a primary language, most of the code the software was written in also was created by Primary English Speaking Developers
- Euros have more buying power in the USA so you can get more for your money
- There is far more ongoing Reliability, Usability, Development Research in the US, we are all linked in with each other and certainly very collaborative.
I think the time has come for international countries to pledge their support and give back regardless of trade treaties. It’s always a good thing to drive quality in your product and well paying for quality is a good thing, it will go much faster and you will no have to worry day to day what level of quality you are receiving by outsourcing to the other imitations. Believe me less headache. And for your short-term CEO’s or executives in the US you can definitely benefit from driving cheap quality solutions and IT outsourcing locally to the USA. Before jumping on the copycat business bandwagon do some real research. As always we are here to serve IT local and International Interests as you have Virtual Support needs. You want quality and Elite support, and we have that.
Forget writing down your passwords, Encrypt them with Keepass
Forget writing down your passwords on a piece of paper under your wallet. You can just store them in a free as in Open Source software program vault called Keepass. This is definitely a solution I will continue to consult on, but wanted to share how cool it was. You can neatly store your passwords in a categorical manner so it is easy to retrieve. You double click your password and it copies it to clipboard without showing the password to should browsers.
Keepass shortlyKeePass (or KeePass Password Safe) is a free/open-source password manager. KeePass helps you to manage your passwords in a secure way. You can put all your passwords in one database, which is locked with one master key or a key-disk So you only have to remember one single master password or insert the key-disk to unlock the whole database. The databases are encrypted using the best and most secure encryption algorithms currently known (AES and Twofish). |
So take a look if you need some immediate security and organization of your passwords. We offer encrypted cloud password storage. We can help you set it up, contact us.
